How to Qualify for ATA Worlds and Districts

Who can go to ATA Worlds, Districts and the Tournament of Champions in 2026-27, and what it takes to get there.

An ATA taekwondo season works a lot like The Wizard of Oz. You set off down a long road, everyone keeps talking about a faraway place called Worlds, and nobody hands you a map.

(Fewer flying monkeys. Usually.)

An athlete in a white uniform steps onto a yellow brick path that runs across a tournament hall toward a distant ring
Follow the yellow brick road. Bring your belt.

So here's the map. Any ATA taekwondo member in good standing can enter the Super 20 world tournament at Worlds, with their instructor's permission. Competing for a title is different: you have to qualify. A spot on the State Top Ten in an event can take you to the District Championships. For black belts, making the World Top Ten or winning a District Championship can take you all the way to the Tournament of Champions.

Color belts can become State or District Champions. World Champion is for black belts.

The road has a fork in it. Points carry you down both branches. How far you go depends on the belt.

An athlete stands where a yellow brick road splits, one branch to Districts and one to Worlds
One road, two branches. The belt decides how far each one goes.

Worlds is two events in one week

"Worlds" means two different things, and that's where most of the mix-ups start.

  • The Super 20 is open. It's the only Class AAA tournament and the first tournament of the new season. Members in good standing can enter with their instructor's permission. It also awards the most points of the year: 20, 15 and 10 for first, second and third.
  • The Tournament of Champions requires qualification. It closes the old season, and it's where black belts compete for the title of World Champion. It awards no points.

So an athlete can go to Worlds without qualifying for anything. They just won't be in a title ring.

The first road ends at Districts

Every road to a title starts with the State Top Ten. (Who can be on it, and how it's built, is covered in the top ten guide.) A spot on the list opens the door to the District Championships, but only in that event. Qualifying in forms doesn't qualify you for weapons.

To compete at Districts, the athlete also needs:

  • Leadership program enrollment. ATA headquarters must have the athlete on file as a student in good standing.
  • The instructor's permission. A yes for earlier tournaments doesn't carry over to Districts.
  • A current membership.
  • Online registration. There's no sign-up at the door, and the rank you register at can't change afterward.

This season, there's no minimum belt color. Any rank on the State Top Ten can go, white belts included. In past seasons, Districts started at camo belt, so it's still worth checking with your instructor.

(Yes, a yellow belt can follow the yellow brick road.)

One-step sparring isn't a District event. The running order and any byes are drawn at random, so a higher spot on the State Top Ten doesn't decide who goes first. Win the division, and you're the District Champion.

For a color belt, that's the end of the road. It's also a real title.

The second road is for black belts only

A black belt can qualify for the Tournament of Champions in two ways, event by event:

  • Finish in the World Top Ten for that event, or
  • Win a District Championship in that event as a black belt.

That's why a Tournament of Champions ring can have more than ten athletes. Everyone competes at the Decided rank of the division, using the standard form for that division. If an athlete qualifies in two rank divisions, they compete in the higher one. Win the ring, and you're the World Champion.

(A color belt who wins Districts doesn't go on. Their road ends one stop earlier.)

One note for families who travel: a US athlete who wins at the Pan Am Championships doesn't qualify for the Tournament of Champions at Worlds that way. The two paths above are the way in.

The dates that decide it

For the 2026-27 season:

  • April 15, 2027: The last day for an in-school (Class C) tournament to count.
  • April 24, 2027: The season ends. Final standings follow.
  • May 15, 2027: The rank on file with ATA headquarters sets the athlete's District division.
  • June and July 2027: The post-season, with Districts first and Worlds after. ATA posts the exact dates and registration windows.

For 1st Degree Recommended black belts, Decided rank must be on file by May 15 or all State and World Top Ten points for the season are lost.

March 30 is the dividing line for new black belts. Earn 1st Degree Decided on or before March 30, and you can no longer compete as a color belt at Districts. You can go only if you also qualified as a black belt. Earn it after March 30, and you can compete in the color belt event you qualified for. If you qualified both ways, your instructor decides.

And if any points look wrong, fix them within 30 days of posting. For April tournaments, the deadline is May 5, 2027. A missing point in April is a missing spot in June.

Quick answers

Do you have to qualify to go to ATA Worlds?

Not for the Super 20 world tournament. You do for the Tournament of Champions, where World Champions are decided.

Is there a minimum belt rank for ATA Districts?

Not in 2026-27. Any rank on the State Top Ten can compete. In past seasons it was camo belt and up, so check with your instructor.

Can a color belt compete in the Tournament of Champions?

No. Color belts can become State Champion and District Champion.

So the next time someone asks if they're going to Worlds, you'll know which road they need to take and how to get there. No wizard required.
